I. Doctrinal Distinctives

Key distinctives of Hope Community Bible Church:

These "distinctives" represent what is taught from our pulpit and in our classes, studies and fellowships. While we do hold firmly to these teachings and will defend them Scripturally, we do not exclude fellowship with other genuine believers who may hold to slightly differing viewpoints.

  1. The Five Solas

    Sola Scriptura means Scripture alone. We believe that the Scripture alone is the rule for our lives.

    Sola Gratia means grace alone. We believe that sinners are justified before God by grace alone. We have no merit of our own, but justification is all of the grace of God.

    Sola Fide means faith alone. We believe that sinners are justified through faith alone apart from any works.

    Solus Christus means Christ alone. We believe that salvation is found in Christ alone. It is not to be found in any church, pope, priest, bishop, or any other religion. Christ alone is the source of eternal life.

    Soli Deo Gloria means glory to God alone. We believe that God gets all the glory for our salvation, and we should live devoted to glorifying God.

  2. The Doctrines of Grace

    As a church, Hope CBC is committed to teaching and preaching the Word of God for the glory of Christ. By God's grace we proclaim the gospel of Christ, knowing that Christ will save His people through that proclamation by the power of the Holy Spirit. The doctrines of grace are commonly summarized by these five terms:

    Total Depravity – Not that people are as bad as they can be – but rather that they are as bad off as can be in that nothing a person does is good enough to earn his standing before the holy God.

    Unconditional Election - God elected some sinners to salvation of His own free will independent of anything the sinners would or would not do.

    Limited Atonement - Christ died for the Church to save His people from their sins.

    Irresistible Grace - The Holy Spirit irresistibly draws all the elect to Christ by grace through faith.

    Perseverance of the Saints - All the elect will persevere to the end in faith and be glorified with Christ.


  3. The Church

    We believe that the true Church, called in Scripture the Body of Christ, is a spiritual organism. Every person who has trusted Jesus Christ for salvation in this present age has been baptized (placed) into this organism by the Holy Spirit. The local church, as established in Scripture, is made up of redeemed individuals who have joined together for worship, instruction, fellowship, and service.
    (Eph. 1:22,23; 5:25-32; 1 Corinthians 12:12,13; Acts 2:42; 13:1,2), exhibiting the true love of God to each other.

  4. Creation

    We believe in the Biblical account of the creation of the universe in six literal, solar days; that God created by His Word the heavens, the earth, and all their hosts, without pre-existing materials; that man was created by a direct act of God; that all humans were present in Adam when he was created; that new individuals (in all their parts) come into existence today, not by a continuing creation, but through the laws of propagation established by God; that each individual is a living person from the moment of conception; that all forms of evolutionary hypotheses are serious errors which strike at the very person and glory of God.
    (Genesis 1:1-31; 2:7; 5:3; Exodus 20:11; Hebrews 11:13; Psalm 139:13-16; Luke 1:41,44; John. 1:3; Romans 5:12-24; 1 Corinthians 15:22; Colossians 1:15-19; Hebrews 11:3).

  5. Baptism

    One area where Hope CBC differs from many of those who hold to a reformed tradition is in our teaching on baptism. We believe that only those who have received the Holy Spirit are true members of the Christ’s Church. We therefore teach that only believers should be baptized, and we practice baptism by immersion
    (Matthew 28:19; Romans 6:3-5; Colossians 2:12)

  6. Biblical Dispensations

    We believe that the dispensations are divinely ordered stewardships, or rules of life (not ways of salvation), by which God administers His purpose on Earth through man under varying responsibilities in successive ages. Each dispensation begins with man being divinely placed in a new position of privilege and responsibility, and each closes with a failure of man resulting in righteous judgment from God. Three of these dispensations, or rules of life, are the subject of extended revelation in Scripture. They are the dispensation of the Mosaic Law, the present dispensation of Grace (the Church age), and the future dispensation of the Millennial Kingdom. They are distinct and are not to be intermingled or confused, as they are chronologically successive. We believe a clear distinction is presented in the Scriptures between God’s program for Israel and God’s program for the Church.
    (John. 1:17; 1 Corinthians 9:17; 2 Corinthians 3:9-18; Galatians 3:13-25; Ephesians 1:10; Colossians 1:24,25; Hebrews 7:19; Revelation 20:2-6).

  7. The Second Coming of Christ

    We believe in the imminent, personal, pre-tribulational coming of the Lord Jesus Christ for His Church and His subsequent premillennial return to earth with His saints to establish His Millennial Kingdom upon the earth
    (1 Thessalonians 1:10; 4:13-18; Revelation 3:10; Zechariah 14:4-11; Revelation 19:11- 16; 20:1-6).



II. Statement of Faith

Hope Community Bible Church is associated with the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA), an association of some 1,300 autonomous churches united by a mutual commitment to serve our Lord Jesus Christ with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and obedience to the Word of God. We are committed to cooperate with one another in ministry and fellowship as we seek to fulfill the Great Commission which Christ has entrusted to His Church.

  • What Does "Evangelical" Mean?

  • According to the EFCA, the term Evangelical refers to our commitment to the proclamation of the Gospel and to the authority of Scriptures as being inerrant in the original writings and the only safe and sufficient guide to faith and practice.

  • What Does "Free" Mean?

  • According to the EFCA, the term Free refers to our form of church government as being congregational. Evangelical Free Churches depend upon the active participation of each member of the church. Hope Community Bible Church enjoys an Elder-led, representative form of congregationalism.


We Believe:

  1. We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and the Divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life.
    (Deuteronomy 6, 10:12-13; Psalm 19:7-14, 119-16; Matthew 5:17-20, 24:35; John 6:63, 10:34-35, 20:31; Romans 1:16-17; I Thessalonians 2:13; II Tim. 3:16-17; II Peter 1:19-21; Revelation 22:18-19)

  2. We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
    (Genesis 1:1 - 2:25; Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 3:16-17, 28:18-20; John 10.30; I Corinthians. 8:6; Colossians 1:15-20).

  3. We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Further, He rose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate.
    (Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-35; John 1:1-5, 19:16-30, 20:1-29; Acts 1:9; Romans 6:23; I Corinthians15:3-8; Philippians 2:6-11; Hebrews 4:14-15, 7:24-27; I John 2:1).

  4. We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and during this age to convict men, regenerate the believing sinner, and indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service.
    (John 7:38-39, 16:7-14; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:9-16.26-27; I Corinthians 3:16-17; Titus 3:5).

  5. We believe that man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is therefore lost and only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.
    (John 7:38-39, 16:7-14; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:9-16.26-27; I Corinthians 3:16-17; Titus 3:5).

  6. We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and such as receive Jesus are born of the Holy Spirit, and thus become children of God.
    (Isaiah 53; John 1:12-13; 3:1-17,5:24, 14:6, I Corinthians 15:3-1; Ephesians 2:8-9; Hebrews 9:22; I John 5:11-12).

  7. We believe that the Lord's Supper and Water Baptism are ordinances to be observed by the Church during this present age. They are, however, not to be regarded as means of salvation.
    (Matthew 3:13-17, 26:26-29, 28:18-20; Luke 22:14-20; Acts 2:38-42, 8:36-39, 16:30-33; Romans 6:1-4; I Corinthians 1 1:23-32; Ephesians. 2:8-9).

  8. We believe that the true Church is composed of all such persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the body of Christ of which He is the head.
    (Matthew 28:19; John 17:20-21; Romans 12:4-5; I Corinthians 12:12-13; Ephesians 1:22-23, 4:1-16).

  9. We believe that only those who are thus members of the true Church shall be eligible for membership in the local church.
    (John 1:12-13; Acts 2:41-17,5:14).

  10. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of the Church, and that every local church has the right, under Christ, to decide and govern its own affairs.
    (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 6:1-7, 13:1-3; Ephesians 1:22,2:19-20,4:15-16).

  11. We believe in the personal and premillennial and imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and that this "Blessed Hope" has a vital bearing in the personal life and service of the believer.
    (Daniel 7:13-14; Matthew 24:30,42-44; John 14:3; Acts 1:11; 1 Corinthians 15:50-58; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18; Titus 2:11-14; Rev. 1:7, 3:10-11).

  12. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting conscious punishment.
    (Matthew 25:31-46; Luke 24:18, 36; John 5:28-29; l Corinthians 15:12-23; I Thessalonians 4:13-17; I John 11-12; Revelation 20:4 - 22:6).

Hope Community Bible Church does not endorse the modern charismatic movement.



III. Ancient Creeds and Confessions

We agree with these ancient creeds of the Christian church...

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen.

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of the Father before all worlds;
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God;
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made.

Who, for us men for our salvation,
came down from heaven,
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary,
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered and was buried;
and the third day He rose again,
according to the Scriptures;

*The word "catholic" refers not to the Roman Catholic Church, but to the universal church that consists of all people who savingly trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Protestant Confessions:

On the doctrines of Scripture, Creation, the attributes of God, the character of man, God’s sovereignty, human will, final judgment, redemption, justification, and the nature of salvation, we are in full agreement with the Protestant confessions listed below. On other issues we are not necessarily in total agreement.




IV. The Cambridge Declaration

The Cambridge Declaration of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals

April 20, 1996

Evangelical churches today are increasingly dominated by the spirit of this age rather than by the Spirit of Christ. As evangelicals, we call ourselves to repent of this sin and to recover the historic Christian faith.

In the course of history words change. In our day this has happened to the word "evangelical." In the past it served as a bond of unity between Christians from a wide diversity of church traditions. Historic evangelicalism was confessional. It embraced the essential truths of Christianity as those were defined by the great ecumenical councils of the church. In addition, evangelicals also shared a common heritage in the "solas" of the sixteenth century Protestant Reformation.

Today the light of the Reformation has been significantly dimmed. The consequence is that the word "evangelical" has become so inclusive as to have lost its meaning. We face the peril of losing the unity it has taken centuries to achieve. Because of this crisis and because of our love of Christ, his gospel and his church, we endeavor to assert anew our commitment to the central truths of the Reformation and of historic evangelicalism. These truths we affirm not because of their role in our traditions, but because we believe that they are central to the Bible.

Sola Scriptura: The Erosion Of Authority

Scripture alone is the inerrant rule of the church's life, but the evangelical church today has separated Scripture from its authoritative function. In practice, the church is guided, far too often, by the culture. Therapeutic technique, marketing strategies, and the beat of the entertainment world often have far more to say about what the church wants, how it functions and what it offers, than does the Word of God. Pastors have neglected their rightful oversight of worship, including the doctrinal content of the music. As biblical authority has been abandoned in practice, as its truths have faded from Christian consciousness, and as its doctrines have lost their saliency, the church has been increasingly emptied of its integrity, moral authority and direction.

Rather than adapting Christian faith to satisfy the felt needs of consumers, we must proclaim the law as the only measure of true righteousness and the gospel as the only announcement of saving truth. Biblical truth is indispensable to the church's understanding, nurture and discipline.

Scripture must take us beyond our perceived needs to our real needs and liberate us from seeing ourselves through the seductive images, cliche's, promises. and priorities of mass culture. It is only in the light of God's truth that we understand ourselves aright and see God's provision for our need. The Bible, therefore, must be taught and preached in the church. Sermons must be expositions of the Bible and its teachings, not expressions of the preachers opinions or the ideas of the age. We must settle for nothing less than what God has given.

The work of the Holy Spirit in personal experience cannot be disengaged from Scripture. The Spirit does not speak in ways that are independent of Scripture. Apart from Scripture we would never have known of God's grace in Christ. The biblical Word, rather than spiritual experience, is the test of truth.

Thesis One: Sola Scriptura

We reaffirm the inerrant Scripture to be the sole source of written divine revelation, which alone can bind the conscience. The Bible alone teaches all that is necessary for our salvation from sin and is the standard by which all Christian behavior must be measured. We deny that any creed, council or individual may bind a Christian's conscience, that the Holy Spirit speaks independently of or contrary to what is set forth in the Bible, or that personal spiritual experience can ever be a vehicle of revelation.

Solus Christus: The Erosion Of Christ-Centered Faith

As evangelical faith becomes secularized, its interests have been blurred with those of the culture. The result is a loss of absolute values, permissive individualism, and a substitution of wholeness for holiness, recovery for repentance, intuition for truth, feeling for belief, chance for providence, and immediate gratification for enduring hope. Christ and his cross have moved from the center of our vision.

Thesis Two: Solus Christus

We reaffirm that our salvation is accomplished by the mediatorial work of the historical Christ alone. His sinless life and substitutionary atonement alone are sufficient for our justification and reconciliation to the Father.

We deny that the gospel is preached if Christ's substitutionary work is not declared and faith in Christ and his work is not solicited.

Sola Gratia: The Erosion Of The Gospel

Unwarranted confidence in human ability is a product of fallen human nature. This false confidence now fills the evangelical world; from the self-esteem gospel, to the health and wealth gospel, from those who have transformed the gospel into a product to be sold and sinners into consumers who want to buy, to others who treat Christian faith as being true simply because it works. This silences the doctrine of justification regardless of the official commitments of our churches.

God's grace in Christ is not merely necessary but is the sole efficient cause of salvation. We confess that human beings are born spiritually dead and are incapable even of cooperating with regenerating grace.

Thesis Three: Sola Gratia

We reaffirm that in salvation we are rescued from God's wrath by his grace alone. It is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit that brings us to Christ by releasing us from our bondage to sin and raising us from spiritual death to spiritual life.

We deny that salvation is in any sense a human work. Human methods, techniques or strategies by themselves cannot accomplish this transformation. Faith is not produced by our unregenerated human nature.

Sola Fide: The Erosion Of The Chief Article

Justification is by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone. This is the article by which the church stands or falls. Today this article is often ignored, distorted or sometimes even denied by leaders, scholars and pastors who claim to be evangelical. Although fallen human nature has always recoiled from recognizing its need for Christ's imputed righteousness, modernity greatly fuels the fires of this discontent with the biblical Gospel. We have allowed this discontent to dictate the nature of our ministry and what it is we are preaching.

Many in the church growth movement believe that sociological understanding of those in the pew is as important to the success of the gospel as is the biblical truth which is proclaimed. As a result, theological convictions are frequently divorced from the work of the ministry. The marketing orientation in many churches takes this even further, erasing the distinction between the biblical Word and the world, robbing Christ's cross of its offense, and reducing Christian faith to the principles and methods which bring success to secular corporations.

While the theology of the cross may be believed, these movements are actually emptying it of its meaning. There is no gospel except that of Christ's substitution in our place whereby God imputed to him our sin and imputed to us his righteousness. Because he bore our judgment, we now walk in his grace as those who are forever pardoned, accepted and adopted as God's children. There is no basis for our acceptance before God except in Christ's saving work, not in our patriotism, churchly devotion or moral decency. The gospel declares what God has done for us in Christ. It is not about what we can do to reach him.

Thesis Four: Sola Fide

We reaffirm that justification is by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone. In justification Christ's righteousness is imputed to us as the only possible satisfaction of God's perfect justice.

We deny that justification rests on any merit to be found in us, or upon the grounds of an infusion of Christ's righteousness in us, or that an institution claiming to be a church that denies or condemns sola fide can be recognized as a legitimate church.

Soli Deo Gloria: The Erosion Of God-Centered Worship

Wherever in the church biblical authority has been lost, Christ has been displaced, the gospel has been distorted, or faith has been perverted, it has always been for one reason: our interests have displaced God's and we are doing his work in our way. The loss of God's centrality in the life of today's church is common and lamentable. It is this loss that allows us to transform worship into entertainment, gospel preaching into marketing, believing into technique, being good into feeling good about ourselves, and faithfulness into being successful. As a result, God, Christ and the Bible have come to mean too little to us and rest too inconsequentially upon us.

God does not exist to satisfy human ambitions, cravings, the appetite for consumption, or our own private spiritual interests. We must focus on God in our worship, rather than the satisfaction of our personal needs. God is sovereign in worship; we are not. Our concern must be for God's kingdom, not our own empires, popularity or success.

Thesis Five: Soli Deo Gloria

We reaffirm that because salvation is of God and has been accomplished by God, it is for God's glory and that we must glorify him always. We must live our entire lives before the face of God, under the authority of God and for his glory alone. We deny that we can properly glorify God if our worship is confused with entertainment, if we neglect either Law or Gospel in our preaching, or if self-improvement, self-esteem or self- fulfillment are allowed to become alternatives to the gospel.

Call To Repentance And Reformation

The faithfulness of the evangelical church in the past contrasts sharply with its unfaithfulness in the present. Earlier in this century, evangelical churches sustained a remarkable missionary endeavor, and built many religious institutions to serve the cause of biblical truth and Christ's kingdom. That was a time when Christian behavior and expectations were markedly different from those in the culture. Today they often are not. The evangelical world today is losing its biblical fidelity, moral compass and missionary zeal.

We repent of our worldliness. We have been influenced by the "gospels" of our secular culture, which are no gospels. We have weakened the church by our own lack of serious repentance, our blindness to the sins in ourselves which we see so clearly in others, and our inexcusable failure adequately to tell others about God's saving work in Jesus Christ.

We also earnestly call back erring professing evangelicals who have deviated from God's Word in the matters discussed in this Declaration. This includes those who declare that there is hope of eternal life apart from explicit faith in Jesus Christ, who claim that those who reject Christ in this life will be annihilated rather than endure the just judgment of God through eternal suffering, or who claim that evangelicals and Roman Catholics are one in Jesus Christ even where the biblical doctrine of justification is not believed.

The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals asks all Christians to give consideration to implementing this Declaration in the church's worship, ministry, policies, life and evangelism. For Christ's sake. Amen.
